Trading XAU/USD in the FxPro terminal
Find the symbol, size the order with the calculators, and set the exit at the same time as the entry.
Finding XAU/USD in the terminal
XAU/USD is the symbol you want, and it appears in the Market Watch or symbol list of MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge. Search for XAU rather than gold, because the code is what the platform indexes. Add it to your watchlist so it stays visible across sessions.
Confirm the contract specification before you trade: 1 standard lot is 100 oz and one pip is 0.01. That pip definition is what your profit and loss is calculated against, and it is the number that trips people who assume gold moves in the same pip increments as a currency pair. Check the specification panel in your platform, not a third-party page.
The reference price here is about 4275.0, which is a useful anchor for setting up a chart and testing a calculation, not a level to trade from. Read the live price off your own platform when you actually place an order.
Sizing the order with the calculators
Size the position before you look at the entry button. Our position size calculator takes your account balance, the risk you are willing to take and the distance to your stop, and returns a lot size; our pip value calculator converts a 0.01 move into rand for that lot size so the risk is a number you recognise. Do this with the ZAR account currency in mind.
Margin is the next check. At 1:200, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin; our margin calculator shows the rand equivalent and lets you test a larger size before you commit. Remember that 1:200 for retail and up to 1:500 for eligible or professional clients is a cap, not a recommendation, and a larger position uses more of your balance as margin.
Run the profit calculator last, with your intended entry, stop and target, so you see both the loss and the gain in rand before the order exists. If the loss at your stop is larger than the risk you set in the position size step, the lot size is wrong, not the stop.
Setting the exit with the entry
Place the stop loss and take profit in the same order ticket as the entry, not after it fills. A gold position without a stop is an open-ended margin call waiting for a news candle, and adding the stop afterwards is the step people skip when the price moves against them immediately.
Derive the stop from the chart structure and the pip distance, then let the position size calculator tell you the lot size that fits your risk. Doing it the other way round, picking a lot size and then fitting a stop around it, is how a small account ends up over-leveraged on a single trade.
Check the swap before you plan to hold. Overnight financing accrues on a position left open past rollover, so a trade designed to run for several days should be modelled with that cost in mind; the Islamic account is swap-free on request if that fits your approach. The record gives no swap figure, so read the contract specification for the number that applies to you.
Why XAU/USD can appear more than once in the symbol list
The symbol list may show several gold entries because platforms often list the same metal under different contract specifications or suffixes. On FxPro's MT4, MT5, cTrader and FxPro Edge, you might see XAU/USD alongside variants that differ by lot size, swap treatment or account type. The exact variants depend on the platform and your account entity, so check the contract specifications for each symbol before trading. Always confirm you are selecting the XAU/USD contract that matches your intended position size and holding period.
The right symbol is the one whose contract specifications match your trade plan, not simply the first gold entry you see. In MT4 and MT5, right-click a symbol and open its specification to see the contract size, minimum volume step and swap rates. cTrader and FxPro Edge present similar details in their symbol information panels. If two entries look identical, compare the swap lines and trading hours; differences there affect overnight costs and when you can trade. Choose deliberately and save it to your Market Watch to avoid selecting the wrong variant later.
Several gold symbols can also exist because brokers separate retail and professional accounts or because of regional naming conventions. The entity serving South Africa is FxPro Markets Direct Costa Rica Latam SRL, and the symbol set you see depends on the account you open. FxPro is licensed by the FCA (UK) and CySEC, and an FxPro entity holds an FSCA licence in South Africa — check which entity your own account is opened with. That entity determines the exact instrument list, so verify the symbol name in your terminal rather than relying on screenshots from other traders.
The contract size behind one lot of XAU/USD
One standard lot of XAU/USD represents 100 troy ounces of gold, so the notional value moves directly with the gold price. At a reference price of 4275.0, one lot is worth roughly $427,500. A one-dollar move in gold changes the position value by $100, and a one-cent move (one pip, since pip = 0.01) changes it by $1. That contract size is fixed for the standard lot; mini and micro lots scale it down proportionally. Always confirm the contract size in your platform's symbol specification before sizing a trade.
The contract size determines your exposure per pip and therefore the rand value of each price movement. With 1 lot = 100 oz and a pip of 0.01, each pip is worth $1 per lot. A 0.10-lot position is worth $10 per pip, and a 0.01-lot position is worth $0.10 per pip. To convert to rand, multiply by the prevailing USD/ZAR exchange rate, which fluctuates. Because gold is quoted in USD, South African traders carry both gold price risk and currency risk. Use the platform's calculator to see the rand exposure at your chosen volume.
Margin requirements follow from the contract size and the leverage cap, not from the lot label alone. At the maximum retail leverage of 1:200, a 0.10-lot gold position needs about $85.50 margin. That figure scales with position size and the gold price. Leverage is a cap, not a target; trading at the maximum leaves little room for adverse moves. Many South African traders use lower effective leverage by holding more equity relative to position size. Check the margin requirement in your platform before opening, because it changes as the gold price moves.
Placing the stop-loss at entry instead of adding it afterwards
Set the stop-loss in the same order ticket as the entry so the risk is defined before the position exists. On MT4 and MT5, enter the stop price in the modification field before clicking buy or sell; on cTrader and FxPro Edge, attach the stop in the order panel. This prevents the common error of entering first and then hesitating over where to place the stop. It also ensures the platform validates the stop distance against current price before the order is accepted, so you know the order is valid at submission.
A stop placed at entry fixes your maximum loss in rand terms before the trade can move against you. Decide the stop distance from the chart structure, then calculate the position size that keeps the loss within your risk limit. With 1 lot = 100 oz and a pip of 0.01, a 5.00 move in gold (500 pips) is $500 per lot. If you risk R1,000 and the USD/ZAR rate is 18.50, that is about $54, so you would trade roughly 0.10 lots. Doing this arithmetic before entry removes the temptation to widen the stop later.
Attaching the stop at entry also avoids the gap between fill and protection that can occur in fast markets. Gold can move sharply on news, and a position left unprotected for even a minute carries unintended risk. If your platform supports it, use the option to attach a stop-loss to a market or pending order. For pending orders, the stop is placed automatically when the order fills. Verify in the terminal that the stop is active immediately after execution. If it is not, add it at once rather than waiting for the next candle.
Reading the swap line on an overnight gold position
The swap line shows the amount credited or debited to your account when a position is held past the platform's daily cut-off, typically 00:00 server time. Gold swaps are calculated from the difference between financing rates on the two currencies and the broker's markup. Because XAU/USD involves a metal and a currency, the swap depends on the interest rate differential and on whether you are long or short. The exact swap rates are shown in the symbol specification and can change; check them before holding overnight. Swap is separate from spread and commission.
A long gold position usually incurs a negative swap when the cost of financing the metal exceeds the interest earned on the USD leg, but the sign and size depend on prevailing rates and the broker's terms. The swap line in the terminal shows the projected daily charge or credit in your account currency, which for South African clients is ZAR. Because the rand value depends on the USD/ZAR rate, the ZAR swap amount can vary even if the USD swap is unchanged. Review the swap history in your statement to see what you actually paid.
Holding over Wednesday often attracts a triple swap to account for the weekend, so the swap line can show three times the daily rate on that day. This is a standard convention in leveraged trading, not a penalty specific to gold. If your strategy involves holding positions for days, factor the cumulative swap into your expected return; for short-term trades, the swap is usually a minor cost relative to spread and price movement. The swap line is an estimate until the rollover is processed, so treat it as indicative and confirm the actual charge in your account statement.
How leverage caps and margin interact with the gold contract size
Leverage is a cap on borrowing, not a setting you should aim for, and the maximum available to South African retail clients is 1:200. Eligible or professional clients may access up to 1:500 depending on the instrument, but that higher cap carries greater risk of rapid loss. Margin is the deposit required to open a position, calculated as notional value divided by the leverage cap. At 1:200, a 0.10-lot gold position at 4275.0 needs about $85.50 margin. That figure moves with the gold price, so monitor it if you hold positions.
The margin requirement changes as the gold price changes, which can lead to a margin call if your account equity falls below the required level. For example, if gold rises and you hold a short position, the notional value increases and so does the margin required. South African traders should keep a buffer above the minimum margin to avoid forced liquidation. The platform displays the margin requirement in real time; check it before adding positions. Using lower effective leverage by trading smaller size reduces the chance of a margin call during volatile gold moves.
Margin is held in the account currency, so for South African clients it is converted to ZAR at the prevailing rate. That means USD/ZAR movements affect your available margin even if the gold price is unchanged. If the rand weakens, your USD-denominated margin requirement translates to more rand, potentially reducing free margin. Fund your account with local cards, bank transfers in ZAR, or e-wallets, and allow for currency conversion. Always verify the margin requirement in your terminal, because it depends on your account entity and the instrument's specification.
What the swap line means for a position held over multiple days
The swap line accumulates daily for as long as the position remains open, so a multi-day hold can turn a small daily cost into a meaningful drag on returns. Each day's swap is debited or credited at rollover, and the cumulative amount appears in your account history. For a long gold position, the swap is often a cost, but it can be a credit depending on rates. The exact daily rate is shown in the symbol specification and can change; review it before planning a multi-day trade. Swap is separate from spread and commission.
The cumulative swap effect depends on the direction of your trade and the prevailing interest rate differential. A short gold position may earn a credit when the financing cost of the metal is lower than the USD interest earned, but the opposite can occur. Because the swap is applied in the account currency, the rand value of the swap also depends on the USD/ZAR rate at each rollover. South African traders holding gold over weeks should estimate the total swap using the current rate and monitor it, as rates can change without notice.
The swap line is not a fixed cost; it is recalculated daily and can vary with market conditions and the broker's terms. For positions held over weekends, the triple swap on Wednesday increases the weekly cost. If you plan to hold through major events, check whether the swap rate has changed and adjust your expectations. The platform shows the swap in the symbol specification and in the trade dialogue; use that figure rather than assuming it stays constant. Always confirm the actual charge in your statement after the position is closed.
